Los Cerros opens each season from October 1st through late April — there's no single "best" time, just the right time for what you're after. October opens the season: quiet winds, quiet days, and the gentlest prices of the year, while snow still crowns the peaks. November is Patagonian spring at its finest — wildflowers, trails in superb condition, and for many returning guests, the best-kept secret of the calendar. December through February is peak season: the longest days of the year, with 10 pm sunsets that make up for busier trails — book months ahead. March and April bring autumn, highly recommended: a spectacular display of colour in the lenga forests, calmer winds and exceptional light for hiking and photography. From May to September the hotel is closed for the Patagonian winter.
Most travellers arrive via El Calafate, whose international airport is a three-hour panoramic drive away — following Lago Argentino, the open steppe, and the first views of the Fitz Roy on the horizon. From Torres del Paine or Puerto Natales in Chile, the route crosses the border at the Cancha Carrera – Cerro Castillo pass before continuing towards El Calafate and on to El Chaltén. Private transfers can be arranged for the entire journey, turning the trip itself into an experience: a single route connecting two natural icons of the world.
El Chaltén has activities for every level. For gentle days: Chorrillo del Salto and its waterfall, Laguna Capri (a soft 3–4 hour walk with Fitz Roy views), the Mirador del Cerro Torre, and the Lago del Desierto navigation — ideal for children and guests with reduced mobility. Beyond the trails: visits to historic Patagonian estancias, scenic drives north to Lago del Desierto, wildlife observation from accessible viewpoints, photography tours, and the food of the village itself. Our resident host will happily build a plan that never requires a mountain.
We recommend three to seven days. A minimum stay of three allows the essential circuit: Laguna Capri on arrival day, Laguna de los Tres for the Fitz Roy, and Laguna Torre for the Cerro Torre. Five to seven days is the ideal — the main treks plus excursions, a rest day for the hotel and its table, and crucial flexibility for Patagonian weather. Longer stays open the multi-day routes, the Perito Moreno Glacier excursion, and the region's quieter corners.
Think in layers, and protect against wind and rain: a thermal base layer, an insulating fleece or down, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. Waterproof trekking boots are essential, as are a hat and gloves — even in summer — plus high-factor sunscreen and good sunglasses. And a tip from the house: Los Cerros offers laundry service, so there is no need to pack for every day.
The main trails are safe and well marked, but Patagonia asks for respect. Register at the Visitor Centre where required, inform the hotel of your itinerary, carry an updated map and at least two litres of water, and start early — mornings bring the best conditions. Guides are mandatory for glacier treks and technical routes, and recommended for first-time mountain visitors or adverse weather. Our reception team reviews conditions with guests every day.
Yes. Breakfast at Restaurant El Viento is included with every stay. A favourite among our guests, it is served from 6:30 am to accommodate early departures and features freshly baked bread, homemade Patagonian preserves, regional cheeses, seasonal ingredients, eggs prepared to order, and a selection of coffee and premium teas.
Los Cerros is just a five-minute walk from the main trailheads to Fitz Roy (Laguna de los Tres) and Cerro Torre (Laguna Torre). One of the hotel's greatest advantages is its location: enjoy breakfast and set off on foot, without the need for transfers or early-morning logistics.
Yes. We can arrange private transfers from El Calafate airport or town centre. The journey takes approximately three hours along Ruta 40 through the Patagonian steppe — a remarkable drive in itself. Please mention it when making your reservation.
We recommend booking three to six months in advance for stays during December and January, when Los Cerros is frequently fully booked.
For those seeking quieter trails, brilliant autumn colours and greater availability, November, March and April are among the best times to visit — and are increasingly favoured by returning guests.
Flexible rates allow cancellation without charge up to fourteen days before arrival — thirty days for stays between December 20 and the end of February. Non-refundable rates are exactly that: no reimbursement is made, though we will gladly help you switch dates when possible. The applicable policy for each rate is displayed clearly at the time of booking.

The Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre are not visible from the hotel itself — they reveal themselves on the trails, which is part of their magic. What the hotel does offer is its position at the top of the village: every room faces the mountains, and Valley View rooms in all four categories open onto a wide panorama of the Río de las Vueltas and the surrounding peaks — a view many guests consider reason enough to book one.
