The destination
Founded in 1985, El Chaltén sits at the northern end of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares — a UNESCO World Heritage site covering 726,927 hectares of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Argentina's trekking capital. The place where the Andes end and the ice begins.
The trails here leave directly from the village. No buses, no park fees, no permits. The Fitz Roy massif — known to the Tehuelche as Chaltén, the smoking mountain — rises to 3,405 metres and is visible, on clear days, from your room.
The season runs from October to April. Days are long, light extraordinary, weather volatile. That volatility — the sudden clouds, the roaring winds, the sun breaking through — is precisely what brings people back.

Gentle · 3 hrsThe hotel
Los Cerros was founded to answer a single question: what does a traveller genuinely need after a hard day in the mountains? The answer turned out to be less complicated than expected — warmth, an excellent meal, a proper bed, and a view that makes the effort worthwhile.
We have spent twenty seasons refining that answer. The result is a hotel that understands its guests because it was built by people who walk the same trails.

Santa Cruz, Patagonia Argentina
Every room faces the mountains. Floor-to-ceiling windows, premium cotton bedding, and a view that rewards the early riser. Artisan breakfast included in all rates.
Oct — Nov
Wildflowers in the valleys, fewer visitors on the trails. Weather is variable but the light is extraordinary. Good availability.
RecommendedDec — Feb
The longest days. Trails busy, but sunsets at 10 pm make it worth it. Book well in advance — rooms sell out months ahead.
Peak seasonMarch — April
The lenga beech turns orange and red. Possibly the most beautiful time of year. Calmer winds, excellent photography conditions.
Highly recommendedMay — Sep
The hotel closes for the Patagonian winter. Snow covers the mountains. Some trails remain accessible for experienced mountaineers.
Hotel closedEl Chaltén has no shortage of places to sleep. What it has less of is places to stay — hotels that understand the rhythm of a trekking day and are built around it rather than despite it.
Los Cerros sits at Las Loicas 1, a five-minute walk from the main trailheads into the park. There is no need for transport, no early-morning logistics. You wake up, have breakfast, and walk out the door towards the Fitz Roy.
Fly into El Calafate (FTE) — served by direct flights from Buenos Aires, Bariloche and other Argentine cities. From El Calafate, El Chaltén is a three-hour drive along Ruta 40. The hotel can arrange private transfers on request.
November to April. The hotel operates exclusively during the Patagonian summer season. March and April are increasingly popular — autumn foliage, quieter trails, and clearer skies than midsummer.
All trails in El Chaltén are free of charge and require no permits. They depart directly from the village and are well marked throughout. The park entrance requires brief registration but no fee.
Yes. An artisan breakfast at Restaurant El Viento is included in all rates — freshly baked bread, homemade Patagonian fruit jams, local cheeses, and hot drinks. It is served from 7 am to accommodate early trail departures.
Five minutes on foot. The main trailheads for both the Fitz Roy (Laguna de los Tres) and Cerro Torre (Laguna Torre) routes begin at the village edge, a short walk from the hotel. No transport is required.
Yes. We can arrange private transfers from El Calafate airport or town centre. The journey takes approximately three hours along Ruta 40 through the Patagonian steppe — a remarkable drive in itself. Please mention it when making your reservation.
For December and January, we recommend booking three to six months ahead. The hotel consistently sells out during the peak weeks. November, March and April offer more availability and are increasingly preferred by experienced travellers.
Flexible rates allow cancellation without charge up to seven days before arrival. Non-refundable rates carry a discount. Full details are displayed at the time of booking through our reservation system.
Very much so. Family rooms are available, and the shorter trails — Laguna Capri, Mirador de los Cóndores — are well within reach for children. Our team is happy to suggest itineraries tailored to families.
"The most extraordinary hotel I have stayed in. The view from the room at sunrise — the Fitz Roy turning red — is something that cannot be adequately described."

"Restaurant El Viento deserves a mention on its own. After a full day on the Fitz Roy trail, coming back to that level of cooking and service made all the difference."

"We have been to Patagonia three times. Los Cerros is the reason we keep returning to El Chaltén specifically. The staff remember your name."
